About the Book…
Letters to the River is a unique work in that it is written to the natural world. At other times I write from a far-more traditional standpoint, which is to share my thoughts and opinions about things. In this section titled "Articles and Essays," I have included several of these writings on subjects I have found interesting or compelling.
Some of the selections I've included have been published in magazines. Others I wrote because the themes seems important, and these may have been sent to friends or a much-wider mailing list. The writings, both new and old, span the seemingly-opposed shores of inner and outer. They include essays on gender roles, our relationship to the natural world, the relevance of myth to modern life, and dangers and pitfalls on the spiritual path, each attempting to illuminate perennial teachings as they apply to leading a balanced life.
But there are two threads that weave throughout every article. First, every piece views the world through a lens that is different from the ordinary. They offer fresh perspectives, and these perspectives may seem opposed to the common consensus around an issue, or unusual in that the point of view and paradigm they are written from is outside what we have inherited and assume to be true. Secondly, each selection addresses both an inner and outer reality, assuming that they mirror and influence each other. They proceed from the assumption that "We see the world the way we are, not the way it is," that our way of looking at the world influences or determines the world we see and vice-versa, and therefore every issue involves both an inner (psychological or spiritual) and an outer (practical or political) dimension.
I hope you enjoy them. May they help to broaden your horizons as you live a larger story and soar in an unfettered and unlimited sky.
